The broader assumption worth killing here is that construction debris always costs more than household waste. It doesn’t, and across the three schedules we pulled it never once did. Cherokee County, South Carolina charges $94.85 per ton at its transfer station for municipal solid waste and $50 per ton at its C&D landfill, so construction debris is the cheaper of the two by a wide margin. Addison County, Vermont charges $171 per ton for municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris alike under its 2026 adopted rates, with a $9 minimum for loads of 100 pounds or less. Same material, three counties, and the gap swings from thirteen times cheaper down to nothing. What that means for you is that the direction is safe to assume and the size of it never is, so the only number worth quoting from is the one on your own county’s schedule.

Worked on the 10x12 with the slab coming out, at the same 45% margin the framework uses: fuel for two trips $24, labor at 8.5 crew-hours for a two-person crew $340, shed debris at the modeled 2,400 pounds against Brown County’s $65.00 per ton $78, concrete routed to the aggregate line $15, overhead allocation $70. Total cost $527, floor $958. Leave the slab in place and the labor drops to 4.5 crew-hours, the second trip disappears, and the floor falls to $618. The slab is a $340 decision, and almost all of it is labor rather than disposal.

Call your building department and ask three things: whether an accessory structure at your size needs a permit at all, what the fee is, and whether your parcel sits in a historic district or overlay. That call takes ten minutes and is the cheapest step in the whole project.

What about an old shed with asbestos-era materials?
